Spring is on the way and with Mother’s Day approaching too, I have been eager to make something beautiful for my Mum that perfectly suits the season. Always Kalanchoe are the experts behind the kalanchoe houseplant (aka the ‘Flaming Katy’) – the UK’s second most popular houseplant.

Kalanchoes are one the most colourful houseplants you can buy. They are available in a selection of different colours including orange, pinks, yellow and white – Perfect for a spring time floral feature. They are a succulent plant so require very little watering and will stay in bloom for 10 weeks with minimal effort required, which is why I knew they would be the perfect option for a handmade planter.

The perfect Mother’s Day gift…

At this time of year you will undoubtedly notice a huge spike in the cost of flower bouquets. Quite honestly the price tags make me flinch when I see how much it costs for a bunch of flowers that will not likely last longer than a week. With this in mind, I wanted to make a more sustainable gift that will offer weeks of joy, colour and happiness for a fraction of the cost. Small Kalanchoe plants cost just £1.99 each, and with a touch of creativity, can be made in to a gorgeous planter that can be proudly displayed on a table or sideboard.

What you will need:

To make a kalanchoe planter, all you need is the following…

  • 5-7 kalanchoe plants in any colours of your choice
  • A planter to display them in (I used this planter which cost just £10.99)
  • Soil
  • Spade
  • Gift tag and skewer stick if you’re making your planter for a gift.

How to make a kalanchoe planter

I have made a short video tutorial (below) on how to create the kalanchoe planter. You can also use this written step-by-step guide as well.

  1. Start by protecting the surface you are making the planter on. Plastic sheeting or a reusable planting mat is perfect for this.
  2. Fill your planter 2⁄3 with soil. Keep it quite loose to begin with as you will need to manipulate it when adding the kalanchoe plants.
  3. Remove your kalanchoes from their pots, and carefully re-pot them into the soil. Play around with the positioning of them until you have found an arrangement you are happy with.
  4. Add more soil around them to give them a new, secure habitation and pat down gently.
  5. Write or print a gift tag, attach to a skewer stick and display in the planter for the ultimate gift.

Kalanchoe planter gift

It goes without saying that this doesn’t have to be solely made as a gift for Mother’s Day. Kalanchoes are the perfect plant for adding a pop of colour to your home decor throughout spring time. Perhaps you want a new table centrepiece or a decorative planter to liven up your console or shelves… Either way, you’re guaranteed a long lasting feature with these easy-to-care-for plants.

Total cost:

So, let’s compare the costs! In total to make this planter I spent:

  • Planter – £10.99
  • 6 x Kalanchoe plants @ £1.99 each – £11.94
  • Bag of soil – £4.99

Total: £27.92

As you can see, you get far more ‘bang for your buck’ comparatively to spending anything in the region of £30+ for a bouquet of flowers than last no longer than a week.

Kalanchoe plants also offer numerous benefits to help the environment of your home and decorate a space. Here’s just a few examples:

  • They can make you happy! Colour really can make you happy, and with its long lasting colourful blooms, a Flaming Katy is an easy way to add a vibrant pop of colour to your home. Try yellow for positivity, red for an energy boost or soft pink for a moment of calm.
  • They can help you sleep better. Struggling to sleep? Pop a couple of Flaming Katy plants on your bedside table or chest of drawers. This little plant is a night-time oxygenator, meaning it can help promote a deeper and more restful sleep.
  • They’re an easy house guest. As a member of the succulent family, this pretty plant is a great choice as it will bloom happily for 10 weeks with just weekly watering, making it a great choice for new plant parents.
  • They can make your home healthier. When we’re stuck at home, bringing nature inside can not only make a room feel alive but can also help improve air quality by removing pollutants and increasing humidity levels.
