6 stylish ways to incorporate a home office in to your house…

I very much enjoyed tackling this feature for September’s issue of Ideal Home Magazine as it’s a topic close to my heart. As a freelance stylist, a lot of my work is done in the comfort of my home, but that’s not always as nice as some may think…

Up until a couple of years ago, my office was cramped in to the corner of my living room. It wasn’t long before it became very apparent that it was no longer a room for comfort, but more of a messy-stress zone with an abundance of folders and notebooks.

So how can you overcome these circumstances I hear you ask. Well, there’s ways to incorporate a stylish home office in to any room, you just had to think outside of the box. After a lot of research, myself and the team at Ideal Home Magazine narrowed it down to these 6 stylist ideas to help you incorporate a home office in to your house:

1 . Living Room: Floating shelf

A stack of floating shelves creates a wall of storage and display in a comfortable living space. Simply add chairs for the perfect laptop landing.

Stylist’s Tip: Instead of just stacking an abundance of folders, try to display the shelves with other decorative household items. Vases and ornaments are perfect for breaking up the clutter, and make the shelves for of a feature instead of just a workspace. Hide paper work in smart black boxes for a stylish finish, and tidy the area every evening before relaxing on the sofa.

2 . Kids Bedroom: Cozy nook

Plan a break at the end of a run of built-in wardrobes to fit a compact desk and chair. A painted pegboard is a great way to make the office space blend in, and will keep the stationery neatly stored away.

Stylist’s Tip: Display the pegboard with quirky accessories and photos to make the space feel more fun. Hang a wall lamp from the side of the cabinet for focused task lighting.

3 . Kitchen: Printing station

If you usually work at your kitchen table, all you need is somewhere to hide the printer. In the shot above, I simply removed a drawer from the ALEX chest to fit a printer in between. Add some stylish legs for a bespoke look.

Stylist’s Tip: Make the space more interactive by adding curtain wires on the wall to hold papers, business cards and memos. Don’t overcrowd the surface to ensure it still looks neat and tidy!

4 . Master Bedroom: Bedside cabinet desk

Office Ideas for the bedroom

A wall mounted unit with a flip-down surface does double duty as a side table, and a pop-up work space. Work away until your heart is content, then hide away the mess before residing to bed.

Stylist’s Tip: A lamp with a downlighter shade creates a pool of task lighting. Display the exterior of the desk with nice, bedroom accessories so you can still relax without being distracted by work.

5 . Spare Bedroom: Alcove style

A narrow floating desk won’t protrude into the room, which means you can stay neatly tucked away in the corner. When guests come to stay, prop a mirror on it to make it double us as their dressing table.

Stylist’s Tip: Use matching stationery and accessories to give the corner a neat and stylised aesthetic. Stash away any unnecessary paper work in to drawers so that the messy clutter cannot be seen!

6 . Hallway: Behind closed doors

If your job involves stuff, give it a dedicated cupboard with a trolley you can wheel desk-side. Use storage boxes to create an organised mess, and clear glass jars so you can easily find what you’re looking for.

Stylist’s Tip: Use the doors as extra storage space by fixing spice racks on the inside. An Ikea carrier bag holder works great as a tube for holding all of those half used wrapping paper rolls!
