9 Stylish Pegboard Organisation Ideas

Today I’m going to show you 9 stylish pegboard organisation ideas that will make a fantastic feature in your craft room or workshop.

For months I have been desperate to add a pegboard in my office. I have a lot of craft & office supplies including cottons, paints, ribbons & washi tapes all of which were stashed away in drawers or storage boxes. I knew I wanted to make a feature of them and have them all in one space, and a pegboard is perfect for just that…

Pegboards are a fantastic way of storing your craft supplies or tools. You’ll often see them hung in office spaces, workshops or craft rooms. If done correctly, they can also make a great focal point in a room, but there’s a fine line between making them look over-cluttered, or smart & chic.

9 Stylish Pegboard Organisation Ideas

Over the past couple of weeks I have been busy creating my pegboard. I must add that it is SO FUN titivating with the layout and organising it all. I want to share with you my 9 top tips to make a pegboard looks stylish and smart, without it turning in to an over-crowded mess.

Frame it

Pegboard Organisation tips

Make a feature out of a pegboard with a painted frame. I made an impulse decision to paint a yellow border around my pegboard once I’d hung it up on the wall and quite honestly, I am so glad I did it! Not only does my pegboard serve a purpose for storage space, but it’s also a statement piece of art. The border really outlines the pegboard and makes a great feature in the room.

To paint the border, I used masking tape and a level to ensure the lines were straight. Then, painted two coats and allowed it to completely dry before having the satisfaction of peeling off the tape.

If you’re nervous about painting on to your walls then you could opt for a washi tape border instead. This way you can easily peel it off if you’re not happy with it or want to change it.

Spray paint the accessories

This is a stage not to be overlooked if you want your peg board to look stylish and on trend. I purchased this stainless steel multipack of pegboard accessories that have a plain metal finish. I wanted them to be more sleek and stand out on my pegboard so I spray painted them black for a graphic look.

Depending on the style you’re after, you could perhaps spray them gold if you want to go more chic. Or, if you want them to be disguised then paint them the same colour as the pegboard so that they’re camouflaged in the design.

Use storage pots or baskets

The aim of the game is to maximise the storage space on your pegboard, which is why storage pots or hanging baskets are the perfect accessory. On my pegboard I have used a selection of storage cups (included in the accessory pack) which each hold paint brushes, pens & pencils. This in affect has emptied out loads of drawer space for me which I can now use for other office supplies.

Styling tip!

Don’t overfill your storage pots or make them look scruffy. Organise everything so that different craft supplies or tools have their own space and make sure they look neat and tidy.

Use dowel rods

Dowel rod storage

This is by far the best storage hack for a pegboard. If like me you’re a washi tape hoarder, then dowel rods are the perfect option for displaying them neatly and keeping them organised. I purchased some 10mm dowel rods from B&Q, and cut them in to 30cm lengths. Simply hang them from two hooks at either end of the rods and it creates a hanging space for your tapes that can be removed for easy access.

Paint storage hack…

This idea sprung to mind with some inspiration from Pinterest. I found this pack of four metal memo boards which have the perfect sized inserts for my acrylic paint pots. To hang the paints, I used two pegboard straight hooks, along with two of the metal memo boards for the paints to rest in.

To stop the frames from moving, I used clear elastic headbands to create a barrier on the straight hook. This makes the structure more secure so the paints cant easily fall down.

Style a shelf

Adding a shelf on to a pegboard not only gives you more storage space, but also breaks up the area and stops it from looking messy. I’ve used my shelf to display my favourite notebook, and softened the overall look with a nice plant as well.

Pegboard shelf brackets are included in the accessory pack (linked above), and I bought this white shelf from B&Q which fits it perfectly because it’s not too wide and has a lip on the front so nothing can easily fall off.

Colour co-ordinate!

This is a fun one! If like me you love colour coordination, then consider organising your supplies in a rainbow of colours to make it more aesthetically pleasing and exciting. Grouping cottons, tapes, ribbons & paints into colour groups makes it look more organised and as though everything has it’s own designated space.

Hang fun motifs & pictures

How’s it hangin’? Get it?! Pardon the pun!

Use fun motifs or pictures to make the pegboard look more exciting and stop it from looking too regimented. Although the main purpose of a pegboard is to store your craft/office tools, that doesn’t mean it can’t be displayed in a fun way! I had a small clipboard that I wanted to hang, and designed a ‘How’s it hangin’?’ print to display on it. This helps break up the space and adds an extra special feature and pop of colour to the pegboard.

Keep it tidy and spacious

Don’t overcrowd your pegboard because you’ll run the risk of it looking scruffy. Allow enough space in between each hook so there’s plenty of pegboard space in between your tools. It may take a while to get the configuration looking exactly how you want it, but I can guarantee it’s a very fun challenge! I’ve lost count of how many hours I’ve spent tweaking my pegboard layout, but I enjoyed every second of it!
