A Complete Living Room Makeover
Find out how we did a complete living room makeover, and my thought process behind it.
Those who follow me on Instagram will know that I recently moved in to my new house with Tom in August last year. As soon as we got the keys we got straight down with the DIY and completely renovated the house throughout.
We had all of the ceilings plastered to remove the Artex, sanded the floor boards upstairs, fitted new floorboards downstairs, and had new skirtings & architraves fitted too. We didn’t hold back! Along with that, we had out bathroom completely remodelled, but more on that later (in a separate post!)
A complete living room makeover…
Once we had got the house to a standard we could finally move in to, we completely FLUMPED. Cream crackered, knackered as they say. It was time to rest and relish in what we had created, and that was such a good feeling after years of waiting to get on the property ladder, and months of loitering for the keys!
Once Christmas had passed, I could feel myself getting the decorating urge to add some colour in to the living room. It’s important to get a feel for a room before jumping in and decorating with colour, and there’s a few reasons for this.
Things to consider when choosing paint colours…
- Lighting is a crucial factor to consider when decorating a room. Depending on how much light you get in room will help you decide what colours will/will not work in the space. For darker rooms, go for colours with light, warmer tones to help lift and brighten the room. Although my living room is north facing, it still gets a lot of light. Assessing the lighting in the room over a couple of months helped me determine that a darker chimney breast would be perfectly fine and not dull the room.
- Funiture & accessories. It was very hard to determine what colours would work well in our living room before seeing everything else in the room. Settle in and assess what you already have before making a brash decision on a paint colour.
- What do you want from the room? Perhaps you want it to feel more lively, or perhaps you want it to be a space you can feel calm and relaxed. Ask yourself how you want to feel in the room and choose a colour that helps suit the mood.
I made an IGTV video of me painting the chimney breast in the living room which explains more about my thought process behind choosing the colours for the room. We chose two contrasting colours and colour clocked the face of the chimney breast against the recess of it. Watch my IGTV video here.

Now the room is full of colour and feels so homely. It’s exactly what we wanted and we absolutely love it. I appreciate that bold, bright colours aren’t to everyone’s taste, but I hope you can take away my advice and tips and incorporate it in to your own home and scheme.
Let me know your thoughts on the room, and if you have any extra tips for choosing the right paint colours.
